Invites entries for HKSSF Inter-Secondary Schools Individual Squash Competition 2014-2015

 

(10 Sep) Jointly presented by HK School Sports Federation and HK Squash, the tournament will be held on 12, 18 & 19 October 2014 at Hong Kong Squash Centre. The tournament is open to all students of member secondary schools of HKSSF while all entries must be submitted by school to HKSSF office directly.

Deadline for entries: 23 September 2014 (Tuesday)

Application should be duly completed via the HKSSF ¡§Online Sports Entry System¡¨ http://sportsentry.hkssf.org.hk. NO late entries will be accepted.

Acknowledgement email and cheque should be mailed to the Federation Office (Add: Rm 203, 7 Carmel Village Street, Homantin).

Max Lee moves into Top 20

(2 Sep) Our Hong Kong Top men¡¦s players, Max Lee made a mighty leap once again in the world ranking.

Not long ago after Max breaking into the Top 30, Max for his first time ever in his career advances to the Top 20, he is now currently ranked at No.20 in the PSA world ranking after finishing the Malaysian Open as the runner-up last week. Yip Tsz Fung, another up and coming player also reaches the Top 100 and is now ranked at 93th in the world ranking.

Max and Yip have shown their determination with their hard work paid off and we are glad to see their improvement in the past months. Max especially is now capable of challenging any top player in the world. We wish them further advancement in the coming future.

Nicol David and Mohamed Elshorbagy crowned in the Hong Kong Open

 

(1 Sep) Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Squash Open 2014 has finally come to a successful end. Four finalists have showcased two unbelievable great squash in front of the crowd at the brand new glass court. More than 700 audiences also witnessed the triumph of Nicol David and Mohamed Elshorbagy.

The Men's Final comes before the Women's. Elshorbagy appeared in his first final and eventually won his ever first title in the glass court against the world No. 1 Gregory Gaultier at the Hong Kong Open. The battle between the first two seeds were in a dramatic climax when Gaultier came back in the third and fourth at 11-4 and 11-8 after being led by Mohamed Elshorbagy in the first two at 11-9 and 11-2. Elshorbagy has shown his determination in the fifth and pull away Gaultier at 11-4 to claim his second title in a week.?

The women's final between Nicol David and Nour El Tayeb is fierce as expected; though Nicol took the first set at 11-4, Tayeb has really pressured her in the second which led Nicol to narrowly win at a tie ¡Vbreak at 12-10. However, the well experienced Nicol managed to hold her rhythm until the last to finish the game at 11-8. Nicol David extends her winning run in Hong Kong to claim her 9th successive Champion title. "It feels really great to win another title in Hong Kong!" said delighted Nicol.?

Glass Squash Court Handover Ceremony

 

(31 Aug) A new portable clear-view squash court was inaugurated yesterday inside the Hong Kong Park Sports Centre to stage this weekend¡¦s semi-finals and finals of Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Squash Open 2014. And a handover ceremony officiated by Mr. David Mui, MH, JP, Chairman of Hong Kong Squash and Ms. Rhoda Chan, Head of Charities Projects, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was held before the matches started.

The new glass court, made possible by a HK$1.32 million donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to Hong Kong Squash, will strengthen Hong Kong's ability to host other major international squash tournaments and provide more opportunities for local athletes to participate in the game, ultimately boosting the popularity of squash in the community.

This latest portable court has its doors integrated into the sidewalls and an optimised glass back wall to maximise viewing angles and improve spectators¡¦ enjoyment and help make it more of a spectator sport where large crowds can watch matches at either indoor or outdoor venues. It also features a bright blue wall colour, an improved lighting system, court ventilation and LED marking lines.

The new glass court exceeds current television guidelines and is similar to models that have been used for highest-grade tournaments in Germany, England, Egypt, France and Sweden, as well as in the recent Commonwealth Games in Scotland. A court of this type will also be used for next month's Asian Games in Incheon, Korea.

Squash Stars Glow in the Welcoming Reception

(26 Aug) Kicking off the Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Squash Open 2014 with all the honorable guests and players took part in the Welcoming Reception last night.

After the welcoming speech from Mr. David Mui, MH, JP, Chairman of Hong Kong Squash and the President of Asian Squash Federation and the speech from The Honorable Mr. Timothy Fok, GBS JP, President of Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong. Mr. Mui and Mr. Fok together with all VIP guests including Mr. James Barrington, Director Corporate Development, Cathay Pacific Airways Limited, Mr. William Leung Wing Cheung, BBS, JP, Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer of Sun Hung Kai Financial, Mr. Jonathan McKinley, JP, Deputy Secretary (Recreation & Sport), Home Affairs Bureau, Mr. William Ko, BBS, MH, Chairman, Major Sports Event Committee, Miss Gloria Tang, Miss Chinese International Pageant 2013 and Miss Kelly Cheung, Miss Chinese International Pageant 2012 and Mr. Duncan Chiu, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of Hong Kong Squash Open 2014 respectively proposed a toast to wish the tournament all the best and success. 

Most players included the women¡¦s world no. 1 and 2, Nicol David and Laura Massaro as well as the men's world no. 1, Gregory Gaultier together with the local top players Annie Au Wing-chi and Max Lee Ho-yin, also attended the Welcoming Reception. They all enjoyed the precious moment to relax and hang out with other players before the tough games commence tomorrow.

Max in the Malaysian Open's Final

(23 Aug) Hong Kong top men player Lee Ho Yin, Max, current world no.25 made a step further to the Champion in Malaysian Open by outcasting the world No.7 Spaniard Borja Golan in the semi-final at 3-1(7-11,11-7,11-8,11-7) yesterday. Max will meet the first seed Mohamed Elshorbagy from Eygpt today at 3pm.

We wish him all the best of luck in the final.

Max reaches to the semi-final of CIMB Malaysian Open 2014

(21 Aug) Well done Max! Our top men player Lee Ho Yin (Max) who's ranked 25th in the world won the quarterfinal match of Malaysian Open 2014 by upsetting the the 4th seed in the tournament, Karim Abdel Gawad, in a tough 5 sets (15-13,10-13,11-6,6-11,11-8). He will be then facing the second seed Borja Golan from Spain in the semis-finals tomorrow evening. The excellent performances Max achieved in this year show he is ready to take any challenge from the highest level of tournament.

Squash and the Olympic Games

(20 Aug) Mr David Mui, MH, JP, Chairman of HK Squash and President of Asian Squash Federation, joined by Mr Tony Choi, the Head Coach of HK Squash and Coaching Director of Asian Squash Federation, were honoured to meet with key officials of the International Olympic Committee ("IOC") on 18 August in Nanjing, China making effort to lobby for support for squash to be included in the Olympic Games. The IOC will review the entire competition programme for the 2020 Olympic Games by the end of 2014 to see if new sports would be given opportunity to join in.

In the meetings, Mr Yu Zaiqing, Vice President of the IOC Executive Board from China and HRH Prince Tunku Imran, IOC Member from Malaysia, expressed their full support for squash and both of them feel positive for squash to becoming a competition sport in the 2020 Olympic Games if opportunity exists. Mr Mui thanked Mr Yu and Tunku Imran for their precious time and presence at the meeting.

Special thanks also go to Mr Pang Chung, SBS, Hon. Secretary General of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China who arranged the fruitful meetings.

Ho Tze Lok and Lui Hiu Lam achieve the Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards

(19 Aug) Congratulations to our junior players, Ho Tze Lok and Lui Hiu Lam Bubble who are rewarded the Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards 2014 in the 2nd quarter in recognition of their significant performance in 21st Asian Junior Individual Championship 2014held in June. Ho Tze Lok and Bubble Lui claimed the champion in GU19 and GU15 repsectively.

"Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial HK Squash Open 2014" - Top players are ready to swirl through the summer

(23 Jul) Long anticipated  ¡§Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Squash Open 2014¡¨ will be staged at Hong Kong Squash Centre and Hong Kong Park Sports Centre from August 24 to August 31. The world top 30 players will once again strive for a lucrative winning purse of HK$1.7 million in the world¡¦s most vivid and energetic city. The early stages of the tournament will be held at Hong Kong Squash Centre before moving to Hong Kong Park Sports Centre for its semi-finals and finals.

Both men and women main draw are announced today, Gregory Gaultier, the current world number one and British Open champion, is the first seed of the men¡¦s event and he will be facing one of the qualifiers in the first round. Max Lee enter the main draw direct for the first time ever and will meet the Englishman Daryl Selby. Via the wild card, Yip Tsz Fung will face Simon Rosner from Germany in the first round. 

For the women¡¦s event, our local stars Annie Au, the seed No. 8 of the event, and Joey Chan are qualified to the main event. Annie Au and Joey Chan will compete with Heba El Torky from Egypt and Dipika Pallikal form India in the first round respectively. "My last encounter with Dipika was in the Asian Team Championships in June. With the support of the home crowd, I won. It definitiely gives me confidence, but Dipika is a very strong player. I must work hard and concentrate to keep the game up again,"told Joey.

Holding her very first wild card, Tong Tsz Wing together with her teammates will join the top players including Nicol Daivd and Laura Massaro in the main draw to display the fabulous skills in this world-class event. Tong will face the seed no. 6 Malaysian Low Wee Wern, " "Wee Wern is strong and I believe I'll learn a lot from her at the game," said Tong.

The defending champion Niocl David and seed No.2 Laura Massaro will both meet the qualifer in the round one.

Max Lee winning the Victoria Open, Australia

(14 Jul) Congratulations to Max Lee, the Hong Kong top player, won his 9th PSA title in the 80th Victoria Open in Melbourne, Australia without dropping a game. Leo Au, Max's fellow teammate, also played well in the tournament who only lost to Max in the semi-final.

Because of Max's steady advancement in his career, he can now enter directly into most major tournaments by his own world ranking including the coming Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Squash Open next month. Please come and support Max and other Hong Kong players.

Dutch Junior Open 2014

(14 Jul) This is a Super Series ("SS") event of the European Junior Circuit ("EJC") just completed over the weekend in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Yuen Tsun Hei became the first Hong Kong junior men player winning the Under-19 title of the EJC-SS. Yuen's success was echoed by Lui Hiu Lam, a young promising girl player, who also won the Under-15 title in the same event. Lui is the second Hong Kong player winning this title after Annie Au.

WSF World Masters Championships 2014

(9 Jul) The WSF World Masters Championships kicked off on last Saturday in Hong Kong with over 780 players from 45 countries participating. This is so far the biggest event in Asia and is also granted the M-mark by the Hong Kong SAR Government. At the opening ceremony with the thrilling lion dance performance, Mr. David Mui, MH, JP, Chairman of Hong Kong Squash, welcomed all the players for their participation and thanked the championship organizing team for a wonderful task done.
